I was asked several times "why" do you (Russians) are leaving Russia? My family decided to emigrate from Russia by various reasons including the collapse of the Russian Geological Survey in the 1990s. Our immigration process extended up to four years from the end of 1999. My family landed in Canada at the end of June, 2004. But few months latter I was needed to come back in Russia because Mom was getting died. I took care of Mom during the whole 2005 year and after came back to Canada.

2002 - Moscow - Geologists want to work and wages. More than one hundred and fifty state employees of various geological scientific and research organizations gathered at the authorized meeting to demand that the officials to let them to work and pay their wages. As the newspaper writes, virtually all the major geological institutions since the beginning of the year put the Ministry on the "hungry rations". Most interesting is that the federal budget funds allocated for the development of the industry, but in fact, the Ministry has suspended contracts with subordinate organizations.

I graduated the Moscow Institute of Geological Exploration (a.k.a. MGRI). I do highly value the geoscientific traditions of the MGRI and proud that have received an education in the Moscow Institute of Geological Exploration which was/is a major educational institute of USSR/Russia in more comprehensive geological mapping, deposits search and exploration methods.

Now my lovely MGRI is dying ... The "former weapons (FW) scientists" here, there and everywhere ...

After my family landed in North America step by step, I was needed to repeat the professional way in Northern America as once it happened in Russia in the middle of 90s. This happened not only with me. Almost of all educated and experienced at mapping and exploration professionals left USSR/Russia and began from zero abroad in 1990 because -

Authorities did not care people established the mineral wealth of the country in 90s - officials do not care about elderly state employees who gave the best years of their youth to build in incredible work conditions a State-Mineral-Resources-Monster. And state employees, including mapping geologists, did not receive the wages during several months in the 90s. And it is again became an unknown history to youth of Russia, where the power erases events from people memory.

A country which does not care of qualified elderly and tells the lies to youth - has no future.

2008 - Ministry of Natural Resources RF (RF MNR): Russia lacks the geologists... The current number of geological enterprises is not enough to fulfill the tasks facing the industry. ... the average size of the industry in 1997 decreased by 10 times and is currently at just over 22 thousand people. "That, given the size and scale of challenges facing the industry, it is not enough. There is staff flow-out, increasing average age of geologists employed in geological studies", - Sergey Donskoy, Deputy Minister of (RF MNR) speaking on September 26, 2008 with a report on the current state of the geological study of subsoil of the RF in the framework of the "Government Hour" in the Federation Council.

14.04.2009 - Women geologists collecting garbage (rus): On the hill are four female geologist. Each of about 50-52 years old. People with such knowledge in Primorsky Krai - rare specialists. But instead of look for minerals, they gather garbage in large bags. This is the city Luchegorsk to help give them the opportunity to earn on public works. In the village of Svetlogore employees of "Russian Tungsten" from last January (2008!) did not recived wages. People have no meal in whole village. How did this come to? Since 1985, almost all the people working at the plant, which is extracted and enriched in tungsten Lermontovskiy field. The company many times to rename, but residents will remember him as the "Lermontovskaya Mining Company." In 2004, it became a bankrupt. The main creditor - the tax inspectorate has decided to put up the company for sale - to bid. Companies participated in the bidding have no relevance to the mining industry - said Nina Khomyakova. - And who could carry out exploration work, even sign up to participate in the tender have not been able to. On the second day of bidding put armed men.

In 2009, in Magadan Region [Russia] are invited to work about five thousand foreigners. The request includes 193 occupations in 11 industry areas. Especially popular among the employers qualified workers of the mining industry - geologists, mining engineers, engineers of bulldozers, loading machinery and drilling rigs, drift miners, dressers of gold ores.

In order to find geologist's job in Canada, I constantly was forced to tell the lies about my real education background and need to specify in my resume that I have only a Bachelor's degree ... It is not a good feeling ... As soon as I am a researcher - I conducted several experiments since 2004. If I were pointed out in resume that I have a PhD diploma (or Russian - Kandidad of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences) - calls from the potential employers ceased. I have never had so much to sklent at the time of looking for a job in USSR/Russia during whole of my professional life (twenty-five years), as I had come to this in Canada since 2004.

Now it is clear - "Canadian employers as a rule do not credit foreign experience ..."

In Canada, as I understand it now, to find of geologist's work in the mining company with the education higher than Bachelor or Master of Science is complex. I have seen such defeat resumes from Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, the Baltic ... Geologists could not find a work just because they have a PhD.

I am deeply regret about the Canadian job market.

In 2008 I broke off the three-year contract with the exploration company, where I supposed to create detailed geological maps in scale 1: 10 000. If you guys, are not interested in geology and the work of your geo-predecessors - I am not interested in your companies.

Eventually, after 5 years of searching across Canada, in 2009, I have found one company where the owners respect the work of their employees. I work for this company till now. I do not want to be neither master, nor slave here ...

It was kind of shock after the Russian paranoia about the state secrets, to sign the same paper in Canadian mining company. Students laughed: What kind of secrets can learn Svetlana? Adapting time in Calgary and more ... (2004-2009)

I emigrated to Canada under the category "Skilled Workers and Professionals"
(NOC - 2113 Geologists, Geochemists and Geophysicists) and was personally interviewed by a Canadian visa officer in Moscow before being accepted. I graduated the Moscow Institute of Geological Exploration (a.k.a. MGRI) and my diploma was approved by CCPE (Canadian Council of Professional Engineers). I brought only one extra-person in Canada - my "own" (:-) Russian husband - A+ specialist. We were need to show a special CAD ammount in RBC for adaptation period and it was a good own-support for newcomers until they found job.

We landed in June 2004 and began to work on unqualified work in September 2004. My family never applied to the Canadian government for financial assistance, except of courses of ESL for newcomers only (in Calgary), which left (a waste of time and money of taxpayers) as soon as we found the first labourer jobs. We also took with own expense several ESL courses. In September-December 2004 - ESL: Improving Your Spelling Skills and August-October, and 2004 - ESL: General ESL Level 3, Bow Valley College, Calgary, AB. We joined at times to the Calgary Public Library book-clubs where learned much about Canada and more ...

My first professional job in Canada (2006) I found during the 15th CALGARY MINING FORUM (April 25-28, 2006) where tried to be involved in new professional world. I made a small poster: A Reference Guide to the Mining Legislation of Russia. I got a summer position with the NWT (2006) and was forced after summer to seek the next opportunity in the new job market.

In 2006 through 2007 I studied in different local colleges in order to adapt myself to the new professional environment. After unsuccessful attempts to find a professional or clerical job in Calgary (I got the Business Administrative Assistant Certificate in CDI College, 2007), I was helped by one teacher of the Mount Royal College (Calgary, Alberta). She looked through my resume, threw out everything that relates to Ph.D. and two weeks later I got a geological job (2007) in Ontario.

My diplomas were looked at almost "with a magnifying glass" in the Canadian Embassy in Moscow (2004). I passed the immigration interview for Permanent Resident Card thanks the possessed education and work experience. But could you imagine? It was easy - just to throw out a summary of my experience and I got my next professional job in Canada ...

In 2009, in order to change radically my resume under the needs of clerk position, I applied to the Needs Determination Officer in the Whaley Employment Resource Centre and officer sent me to the Employment Transition Facilitator, Canadian Career Moves (Government organization).

Since 1995 G-to-G author has collected a vast material on the history of formation and development of the mining relations and Mining Law in Russia. G-to-G author was needed to look for sources in scientific magazines and books at the time of pre-revolutionary Russia. As a result I have found in the Russian State Archives and libraries some official documents regarding the Soviet-American Relations in 1918-1933, some ancient documents where examines the history and issues relating to developing of mining, oil and gas sectors and also mining legislation in Russia.

The process of "PhD Defence" in Russia include two stages. The fi rst one is the presentation at the subfaculty meeting (in our case it is the chair of pedagogics) - it is called "Predefense" (as the result an author/ess may do some amendments, get prepared for potential questions). As a matter of fact the goal of the fi rst stage is not only to edit the content of a thesis, but also to prepare for the second stage - actual DEFENCE in front of so called dissertational counsel. The "Defence" itself is a public event, the relatives, friends of the researcher, people who are just interested in the discussed topic are admitted.

After the "Defence" is being done a decision of the counsel is sent to Moscow to the "supreme attestation commission" (Highest Attestation Commission), which makes the fi nal judgment about conferring the degree of the PhD. In Russia this degree is called – "candidate of scholastics" or "candidate of science") But there are certain cases when a researcher must personally go to the Russian capital in order to clarify the questions and to remove the doubts, which could occur among the members of Moscow commission. Then PhD student expects a letter from Moscow, which should enclose a formal confi rmation of a given degree. The PhD certifi cate is presented by the university rector at the university senate.

The following documents were transated by R. Michael Conner who is accredited translator (Russian into English) since 1975 by the American Translators Association.
